We say goodbye to Drew Curtis, played by Bobby Morley.
In our first interview, you had just arrived in Sydney from Melbourne and didn’t know anyone. You were looking for a place to live, and Jess Tovey was showing you around. Tell me about the journey.
“Yeah, it’s been just under 2 years and I’ve definitely learnt more about Sydney," he started, "and I appreciate it more than I did before I came. It’s a very beautiful city, and there are some parts that I really enjoying hanging around in.” Bobby replied.
“Palm Beach is lovely; I reckon it’s one of the best beaches I have been to. Also there’s so much rock climbing around here, so much ‘bouldering’; that’s something I absolutely enjoy. That’s one thing that’s helped keep me sane in this big crazy city.” He continued.
How have you adapted to the work? You had done a few short films but nothing like this.
“It took 4 or 5 months to feel comfortable with it; then it became so much fun and a challenge, especially when I did It Takes Two and doing Uni (He is doing a Creative Arts degree) at the same time, it was really quite intense. It’s been an absolutely amazing experience.”
Who have been the key people helping you?
‘Well obviously Jess (Belle), then Ada (Leah) and Tim (Dan), they were probably the people I worked with the most. They are so committed to their work and they’re such good people to work with. They’re relaxed and chilled out, and especially when I first started they helped me so much in just calming down, feeling confident and just having belief in myself to just relax and do the work that I wanted to.” He admitted. “And there’s definitely a lot of directors out there that have helped me. I have really enjoyed working with Sam Atwell (former cast member ‘Kane’) he’s a fantastic young director and people like Steve Mann, Jeff Bennett and Geoff Nottage...as much as they may annoy you, they know what they want and they usually get it out of you. They’ve been great, and the crew are amazing. And it’s a really nice atmosphere to work in.”
Do you have any favourite scenes?
“That’s the great thing about this show, you cover so many different aspects of your character in such a fast time, so to pinpoint one is quite hard. I really enjoyed the drag racing stuff with the boys. Rarely do you get to work with a group of males, the show is usually about your girlfriend or being in luurve,” he grinned “so just to have scenes with Rhys and Mark, with us all playing off each other, was so much fun, especially because I was driving and those guys were packing it.” He laughed. “And of course the really intense scenes with Jess, she is so honest in her performance it’s great to feed of that.
What’s on the horizion for you now?
“I don’t have any plans. I am just open to anything; I could be on the other side of the world in 2 weeks time, who knows. I’m doing the road trip on my own to Melbourne, looking forward to some solitary time and putting things into perspective and just reacquainting myself with who I am, it sounds really cliché or silly but I think it’s something you have to do.”
Will you keep up with singing?
"I never sang before It Takes Two, it's something I like having a bit of fun with, but I don’t think I have what it takes to continue that as a career.”
What about working overseas?
“Of course I would love to do films and there is such a push to go to L.A. or the U.K. and chase that kind of thing." He confessed. "But right now for me it’s more just sitting down and calming down and I don’t think L.A. is an option for me in the near future." He declared, then stating that, "Possibly later down the track...but not right now. I think there are a few things that are more important close to home for me that I have to do.”
Will you live in Sydney?
“No I’d move back to Sydney for work, but I don’t know where I’m going to be living. I could disappear and go and live in Darwin.” He smiles. “I would like to do something completely different and just fade away and find myself, and then when I’m ready possibly come back to acting...or who knows I might go into mining, or become a pilot, anything is possible.
Who will you keep in contact with?
“There’s definitely a lot of people that I will stay in touch with. Everyone keeps saying this is it, this is the end of my life, but there is so much more out there. I can see people on their days off, it’s not the end of the world. Life is so much more important than any play or TV show, there is so much to that aspect of my life that I want to explore.”
We can now reveal that Bobby hasn’t had much time to relax. He is already starring in the brand new telemovie SCORCHED with Cameron Daddo, Rachel Carpani, Vince Colosimo and Georgie Parker. Bobby plays Brendan Langmore....a natural leader and a RFS volunteer
We wish Bobby good luck and hope that we continue to see him on our screens in the future.
